With the glorious weather we're having at the moment it's time to dust down the boating gear and get out on the water for the new season.

We have our National Powerboat Certificate courses running most weekends, and an Advanced Powerboat Certificate course scheduled for the weekend of April 16th - 17th. We are also running a powerboat instructor course over two weekends on April 23rd - 24th and Apr 29th - May 1st so if you've ever thought about passing on your skills to others now's the time.

If you are looking to beef up your background knowledge and get the confidence to take your boat further we are running a Coastal Navigation for Small Boats course on April 9th & 13th. We also have a VHF radio course available on Apr 14th & 16th. This is the Irish SRC module 1 & 2 Licence.

The NPC course provides comprehensive training in all the fundamentals of boating, covering boat-handling, safety, rules & regulations and basic navigation. This course is highly recommended for anyone taking charge of a boat and will provide reassurance when taking family and friends out boating.

The NPC will also often entitle you to discounts from your insurance provider and entitles you to apply for an International Certificate of Competency (ICC). This is the certification required to rent or operate powerboats in countries with compulsory competency certification, Spain, France, Portugal, Croatia, etc.

Go 4 It Windsurfing Course

This weekend is the second last of our windsurfing season and with a good forecast I've decided to run one of our Go 4 It courses.

The course focuses on improver techniques like stronger wind stance and harness work, planning, footstraps and deeper water beach starts.

To get the most from this course you should ideally be comfortably sailing in all directions in lighter winds have used the harness and be able to do a basic beach start.

The course runs 10 - 5 on both days, so you better start saving up your energy! Places are limited to 6 so book soon to avoid disappointment. The course costs €200pp using our kit or €150pp using your own kit, a discount of 10% is available if you have already done lessons with us.

Successful Kayak Trip

Yesterdays Kayak trip accross the Irish sea went well. I left the marina in Malahide at 04:10 and met up with the guys in Hollyhead at 06:30. Fergus Cooper was paddling a single with Aisa Cooper and Martin Hearns in a double kayak. We were under way just before 07:00 with the guys making good progress out past the head to beat the tide.

Unfortunately about 5hrs into the trip the rudder bar on the double boat broke, with no way to repair it at sea Aisa and Martin had no option but to retire into the boat with me and take their kayak in tow. Dissapointed but pragmatic Martin said "at least it didn't happen 5 miles from the finish or I would have been really hacked off"

From there on the trip went smoothly with Fergus steadily ticking off the miles. The weather was a little over cast but other wise fair. Hollyhead and Dublin Coastguards provided great assistance tracking our progress and advising the commercial traffic of our position so we didn't get run over (which was nice!).

Shortly after 21:00 Fergus entered Dun Laoghaire harbour completely exhausted but ecstatic about the achievement having paddled for a little over 14hrs straight.

After we unloaded the kit it was a quick spin back around to Malahide with the boat tied up a little after 22:00 and off home for pizza and beer, another day at the office eh!

Kayak across the Irish Sea

As I type Dave is providing safety cover to two kayakers paddling across the Irish sea from Wales to Dublin. It's a beautiful day so I hope they're having a peaceful and enjoyable crossing! Dave drove over to Holyhead at 4am today to meet with them and they left there at 8am with an approximate ETA of 6pm this evening.

Having windsurfed across the Irish sea for Aware a few years ago, Dave was delighted to take part in this challenge.

Wheels of Destiny Cross the Finish Line!

Well, what can I say? Personally I think this is the most amazing challenge that I've ever heard of -- endurance cycling! I'm so impressed and thrilled for John & Murt who completed the Race Around Ireland from last Sunday night until 2am this morning, Friday. The guys completed the course (all 2100km) in a time of 102 hours and 1 minute, and are, according to the Race Around Ireland site, the only team/riders to have completed the race so far and are therefore currently ranked first.

John & Murt - HUGE kudos to you both. And to have done it for AWARE is a very special thing to do. Congratulations and see you for a pint soon!

As you read this, the endurance cycle around Ireland race is well underway. Dave is driving one of the support vehicles for John who instructs powerboating with us, and his cycle partner, Murt. This is an amazing feat and challenge for the all the teams involved, so please, please, donate whatever you can to these guys. You know, I must admit I thought this was a crazy challenge, to undertake a 2100km continuous cycle race, but, do you know what? It's challenges like these that remind us that we're alive, how good it is to do sometimes crazy things just to see if we can, and all the while we're helping others. Brief Description of the Race
Race Around Ireland is part of the Ultra Marathon Cycling Association (UMCA) World Cup series which includes other huge endurance races such as The Race Across America. Unlike other cycling races such as the RÁS or the Tour de France, the course is in no way roped off. There are no marshals controlling traffic flow and there are no planned rest stops or stages in this event. Once the clock starts in Navan at the starting time, it won’t stop until each rider reaches the finish line at the end of the 2,100 km circuit.

If you've done some training with us over the last couple of years you may have come across John Mahon one of our instructors. As well as his watersports credentials John is also a hard-core ( slightly mad) cyclist.

Next Sunday John and his buddy Murt will start the endurance cycling Race Around Ireland as one of only two 2-man teams. The race entails a 2100km non-stop (yes that means one or other of them will be on the bike at all times) circuit of Ireland.

As well as doing the race for the sheer madness of it the guys are helping to raise funds for Aware, the depression awareness charity so please log on here to and help out if you can at all.

Just had a great weekend running one of our ISA National PWC certificate training courses. Day one saw everyone getting to grips with all the set-up and procedures as well as the basic handling qualities of the machines. Everything went according to plan despite one crew managing to capsize their machine on the first morning at slow speed (no names to save blushes!), first time I've seen that happen with the high stability of these skis.

By the end of the day everyone was well comfortable with the basics and even starting to throw them around a little in proper ski fashion so a bit more challenge was needed for day two. As it happens Bray Air show was running on Sunday so a quick nav plan was made and we all met up to launch from Howth on Sunday morning.

The spin to Bray took just over 30mins so with time to kill we went on down to Greystones for a quick look before anchoring the Skis off the beach in Bray for lunch.

The show was spectacular and there was plenty of company from other leisure boaters as well as the Garda Water Unit, Howth Coast Guard boat and some Civil Defence Crews.

All in all a great weekend which enjoyed by 4 tired but happy campers. The next course is scheduled for Sep 11+12 and it is also possible to schedule additional courses for groups of 3 - 6 people.

Windsurfing Kids Camp 3

The third of our summer kids windsurfing camps kicks off on Monday. Aimed at 12 - 17 year olds this is a great way to introduce your kids to a fun, active & healthy out-door sport.

All our courses are ISA accredited and with some of the most experienced and motivated instructors in the country, whether they're a complete beginner or a Hot Shot in the making we can push their level as far as they want to take it.

Class Day Of Wave Action

It took about 7 hours driving and the pain and tiredness tomorrow are probably going to be something else, but it sure was worth it!!

The 20 or so sailors who joined the DMG - Surfdock Surfari to Cross Strand were treated to a 7 solid hours of waves, wind and sun. Most people were on 4.7 - 5.2 sails, with nice head to logo high sets rolling in all day. Most unusual of all for wave sailing in Ireland it was 20 degrees and sunny all day.

It was great to get a days sailing with the crew, Ali B, Oisin, Colin & Jeff as well as all the others who made the trip from Dublin, Limerick, Galway and Sligo. Quote of the day has to go to Cross Strand first timer and young hot shot from Dublin Ryan O'Leary "it's like the best ever day at Dollymount times a hundred!"

Hopefully this is just the first of a few more nice Surfaris before the summers out, and now time for some sleep!!!!

It looks like Sunday is going to provide us with some much needed wave action out west so the DMG and Surfdock crew are looking at doing a little Sunday Funday Surfari Special. Most likely destination is Cross Strand just outside Louisburg Co. Mayo as it’s just over 3hrs (caressing the speed limit) from Dublin and is a relatively easy location for newcomers wave sailing.

Myself, Oisin and no doubt a couple of others will be on hand and will be only too happy to offer tips and advice to any newcomers (or even not so newcomers) who want to come along, look for the vans or IR48 / IR777 so don’t be shy come up and ask

Full House for First Kids Windsurf Camp

Our first kids windsurfing camp for the summer kicked off this morning with a full house. The camp runs 10am to 1pm Monday to Friday and caters for young windsurfers of all levels.

Places for our next camp running June 28th to July 2nd are filling fast so if your interestred in getting signed up don't delay to avoid dissapointment.

As well as our camps supervised windsurfing practice sessions are also available every Wednesday afternoon from 2pm to 4:30pm and cost just €25 including all equipment. These sessions are open to anyone who has got to grips with the basics.

At last it looks like a great forecast for the weekend with perfect conditions for windsurfing and dinghy sailing. Nice Northwesterly winds around F 3 - 4 and temperatures creeping into the early teens.

Junior Sailing Easter Course April 5-9

Malahide Yacht Club are holding a week of supervised sailing at Easter this year (organised and run by DMG Sailsports). It's a chance to get back out on the water early with full supervision and to have a bit of fun. There will be programmed activities for the days to quickly bring you back to speed with your sailing and help you to get back and participate in the club racing. With this in mind we are keeping the price low at €85pp.

You will also have a chance to meet with some of the new instructors for the 2010 season. If you ask them they will look at your sailing standard and advise you of any areas that need your attention before the courses start. It's also a good place to log some of that vital logbook experience.

The minimum age for participants in this course is 9 years. Please keep in mind that it is early in the season so full length wetsuits or drysuits are mandatory. This course is designed as a refresher course and to assess your potential for the coming year. It is not designed for total beginners and you are expected to have completed at least an ISA level 2 (Basic Skills) course even if not passed.

Please complete in full using block capitals. Numbers as usual are strictly limited, places will be allocated to paid up members on receipt of fully completed forms. Please use one form per child.

The 2010 Irish Slalom Series introductory clinics will take place across the country on Saturday March 6th. All four members of the ISS Team will hold clinics in Cork, Donegal, Dublin and Galway. The clinics will introduce newcomers to everything needed to know to take part in your first ISS event. The clinics was also focus on topics such as race tactics, equipment setup, gybing techniques and general information to help you get the most out of the 2010 Calendar. Hi All,

I would first of all like to thank you from the bottom of my heart for all the support.

I was absolutely amazed at the number of people who turned up for Alan's funeral, and the exceptional amount of condolences, emails and cards that we received. I know Alan was much loved and respected, and all the wonderful words will keep me going through the hard times. AWARE were also amazed with the level of donations, €1577.00 was raised outside the church alone!

We intend to keep Surfdock running at all costs as a legacy to Alan, it was his passion (which we and so many people around us share) and was one which he never grew tired of even when faced with some of the more mundane aspects of the job.
This of course was also helped along by frequent visits to sunnier climes, which I have also benefited by.

Aimee and Kirk will be in the shop (who most of you know), while Oisín our wonderful windsurfer and friend, will be able to handle most of the windsurf queries that the others can't - while I will as always be there in the background, and if not, never too far away.

I hope that you will continue to support us, and we will do our utmost, so that you our customers and friends can continue to enjoy the water and all that Surfdock has to offer.

Lets hope we can live up to expectations.

All of our team are involved in every aspect of windsurfing in Ireland, from competing to coaching, and this year we are introducing a couple of completely new events to the Irish calendar. The following events will take off in MARCH, with dates being finalised over the coming days. Watch our website, or the IWA website for more details. SLALOM INTRO Kicking off the season, our Slalom specialist Fintan Day is hosting the Dublin leg of the Irish Slalom Series Introduction events, which are designed to get all budding slalom sailors together, try a few fun races, get some expert coaching and see what it's all about. Fintan will give you all the low-down on what you need to do to get into racing, and help improve your skills and fun on the water. WAVE INTRO In the same vain, Alison Beirne - our intrepid stunt girl and general (forward) looper / slalom racer - is putting together the first: 'St. Paddy's Introduction to Wave Sailing' get together. There will be coaching from Oisín and the Surfdock Team, some informal competition, and loads of tips to help you improve your skills, all while learning and sharing the experience with like minded people. Dates are still to be finalised, but one definite possibility is St. Paddy's Day, March 17th. Location is Dublin, more info to follow on IWA website and e-groups in coming days. SURFDOCK WAVE EVENT It has been a while in the making, but discussions over the winter prompted Surfdock to try and introduce a new aspect to the IWA Wave calendar. On a fixed date : 10th/11th April, we aim to run Round 2 of the Irish Wavesailing Championships.... but the location will depend entirely on the forecast before the weekend. The aim is to travel the country and find the best wind and waves on the weekend, which should ensure that we get a great event with loads of sailing and loads of craic. Possible suggested venues are: Dublin, Donegal, Sligo or Clare. More information will be posted on the website and facebook page, with pre-registration info, and all possible location information (including accommodation etc..) will be given well in advance. We're back......!!!!!

The final events of the 2010 Irish Slalom Series Calendar have been put in place.

Due to the current situation and the big "R" word we have kept the number of events to a minimum. We have also attempted to space the events out as much as possible. On this calendar you will see the return of soem familiar locations. The first event of the season will take us North to the new venue of Newtownards, Co. Down. Another new addition to the calendar is the moving of the Galway event back west to the legendary location of Roundstone...

The ISS rules and guidelines documents are currently being updated. A full set of 2010 rules will be released soon...

The following are the events which have been confirmed on the 2010 Irish Slalom Series calendar:

Event 1 March 27th /28th Newtownards, Co. Down
Event 2 May 22nd/ 23rd Castlegregory, Co. Kerry
Event 3 July 17th/ 18th Downings, Co. Donegal

Free Introduction to the Irish Slalom Series clinics will take place on March 6th 2010. Locations will include Dublin (Fintan Day), Donegal (Maurice Owens), Cork (Pearse Geaney) and Galway (Danny Mulryan). Details will be posted this week.

AN indispensable guide to life in Malahide has just been launched and distributed to every home in the seaside town.
The brainchild of Malahide Chamber of Commerce, the Malahide Directory is essential reading, for tourists and locals alike. Launched at a chamber function, the new publication aims to not only provide a guide to the services in the town, but at the same time help support local businesses.
'It's a directory for businesses in Malahide, aimed at residents and visitors,' Malahide Chamber of Commerce president, Al Ryan, told the Fingal Independent.
' We're seeking to provide a comprehensive listing of businesses and contacts, as well as useful information about the town's services, such as schools and hospitals.
'It also features a map of town, indicating where all the key services are.' Months of hard work went into the project, which was led by Córa Garvey and is self-funding, and the first delivery of the publication has already been made, with two more to follow. 'Our number one aim was to inform people of the huge variety of services and retailing that the town has to offer,' Mr Ryan continued.
'It went out to every home – 8,000 were delivered to local households – and an additional 20,000 brochures will be distributed to businesses in Malahide, particularly hotels, guest houses and retailers, for visitors.
' We want this to have longevity as well and we want it be kept in people's hands.'
The cover also features the chamber's new town branding, including the catch-line 'Malahide Has It', and it's hoped the directory will become and annual publication.
'That's the intention,' Mr Ryan added. ' We'd like to see it expanded.'

Howth Lifeboat Crew Rescues Injured Man from Harbour 20:01:2010
Howth Inshore Lifeboat (ILB) came to the aid of a man who had fallen into Howth Harbour earlier this evening. The 37 year old fisherman, from Greencastle Co. Donegal, slipped into the water while crossing from the pier onto a trawler. He suffered injuries to the head during the fall and was unconscious in the water for approximately 5 minutes. The voluntary lifeboat crew assisted the fishing trawler’s crew in rescuing him from the water, and putting him safely back onto the pier.Several RNLI volunteers assisted in resuscitating the injured man who was still at risk of drowning from the amount of water he had swallowed. Further first aid was then administered as he was also suffering from the onset of hypothermia. The man was taken by ambulance to hospital. Howth ILB crewmember Dave Howard says:“The fisherman is very lucky to be alive, he sustained serious injuries and would have died had it not been for the quick intervention of both his fellow crew and the lifeboat volunteers”.

Windguru is forecasting gales for the IWA Final Wave Event in Belmullet. Everyone in UISCE is busy cutting new streamers, tying flags to the bits of broken mast left behind after last year and praying hard for wind (the swell here is already pumping).

UISCE is hosting the IWA Wavesailing final on the Fri 23/10/2009 – Mon 26/10/2009. Registration will take place on the competition beach Saturday morning which will be announced two days before hand. All Ireland Inter-School Sailing Event

The 34th All Ireland Inter-Schools Sailing Event took place in Sutton Dinghy Club on Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th September. 147 Sailors representing 33 secondary and primary schools competed in the event. Malahide was represented by sailors on teams from Malahide Community School, St. Andrews National School, Pope John Paul II National School, Belvedere College and St. Fintans High School. Racing took place in two fleets, Optimist dinghies and a Mixed Fleet, which competed on handicap.

Malahide Yacht Club member Scott Flanigan & crew Peter Gleeson were 1st in the Mixed Fleet and their team from Belvedere College was also 1st in the Mixed Fleet team competition. Malahide Community School, represented by Brendan Costello, Ciaran Costello and Caoimhe Rainey was placed 5th in the Mixed Fleet team competition.

There was a strong local representation in the Optimist Class with 15 sailors from Malahide Yacht Club. In the Individual Competition, Malahide Community School had 4 sailors in the top 10, with Sean Anglim in 3rd, Lizzy McDowell 4th, Michael Donnelly 5th and Alex Shackleton in 9th place. However, there was an anxious wait until it was confirmed that the Malahide Community School team of Sean, Lizzy & Colm Roche had won 1st place in the team competition by the narrowest of margins. A second Malahide Community School team comprising Michael, Alex and Shane Cox finished 4th in the Optimist team competition and a Belvedere College team, which included Thomas Natin was 5th.

Perhaps the most notable achievements at the event came from the local national school sailors. Conor Cunning, Cian Buckley and Patrick Hensey represented Pope John Paul II N.S. and Gemma McDowell, Colin O’Sullivan, Cara McDowell & Philip McDowell sailed for St. Andrews N.S. These sailors were all competing in this event for the first time and were racing against secondary school students up to the age of 15 in the Optimist class. Despite these challenges, St. Andrews finished 8th and Pope John Paul’s 11th out of 20 teams in the Optimist team competition.

This year Malahide Yacht Club has started a programme to introduce primary school children to the sport of sailing. Since the beginning of June approximately 400 children from three local schools have completed a one-day taster session. This programme is supported by Fingal County Council, Kelloggs and DMG Sailsports. The club also runs Irish Sailing Association junior training courses for club members during the summer and provides race coaching throughout the year.

Just a reminder to everyone to use up your vouchers, windsurfing packages and hire hours before October 18th for windsurfing, or October 4th for dinghy sailing. The end of the season is approaching fast. We will continue to offer private tuition over the winter months to those hardy individuals who own their own equipment. And remember, powerboating goes on all year round so if you're looking for certification, or your VHF radio licence, this is the time of year to do it.

Broadmeadows Estuary - Business as Usual...

This is just a quick update to let you know that it is business as usual for our Windsurfing and Dinghy Sailing activities on the Broadmeadows Estuary.

Following the collapse of the railway bridge and a request from the Irish Coastguard we took the decision to suspend activities last weekend while the extent of the problem was investigated. We are now satisfied that the bridge poses no additional risk to our activities so courses and hire are available again as normal.

On another note, we have a couple of places available on a National PWC Certificate (Jetski) course this weekend and our list of end of season windsurfing equipment for sale is now available.

Irish Student Reprsents Ireland in PWA

http://windsurfing.ie/ JULY 29, 2009: Mikey Clancy IR-253 has just competed for Ireland in the PWA World Cup event in Pozo Gran Canaria winning a double elimination round and 25th in the wave event. 19 year old Mikey told the IWA “It was an amazing experience to compete at such a high level,the intensity of the competition is unreal. I was really nervous in my first round against Peter Voltwater but really got into it in my Double elimination rounds”. “The heats were 12 minutes duration and I was going for everything including doubles and would have got further if the wind had not dropped when I was up against Robbie Swift “. An exhausted but happy Clancy finally said “We have the best conditions to train in here in Ireland and I know now whats needed for me to break into the worlds top 20 sometime in the future”. Farewell to a dear friend

It is with great sadness that we heard our dear friend Tommy Gibbons tragically passed away last weekend. Tom was a fisherman, postman and ferryman but above all else, he was a gentleman. Always on hand to help a friend, he's been a right-hand man to many people, both on and off the sea.

For us, Tom was Westport, and Westport was Tom. Whenever we were in town he'd travel in from InisLyre for a pint or two, and sure, maybe a small one to round off the night. He was such a regular in Glenans on Collanmore, Dave and gang had a chair and plaque put up in the corner, especially for him. It was many an evening I found myself enjoying a 'chat' with Tom, that no-one, including either of us, could understand. We just laughed, and laughed... and laughed. T, you will be greatly missed.

The Sun Shines on the Inaugural METMASTS.IE Turbines Yacht Race

Sunday 31sy May 2009 saw the inaugural METMASTS.IE TURBINES YACHT RACE take place at Arklow Sailing Club, Co. Wicklow, Ireland.

Although most of the country was basking in the glorious sunshine, our sailing enthusiasts were would have preferred significantly more wind. The event had attracted an entry of 15 crews from sailing clubs in Dun Laoghaire, Greystones, Wicklow, Arklow & Courtown and all were looking forward to a challenging race around the Arklow Bank Windfarm. Due to the very light winds the original 34 nautical mile circumnavigation was shortened to an inshore race which was very competitive and eventually won by “Aqualina” in a time of 3:49:26.

The prize giving event in the evening sunshine was well attended by the competing crews, sailing enthusiasts and clients & staff of METMASTS.IE. The prize giving was hosted by Arklow Sailing Club Commodore, Paul Barrett and the prizes were awarded by Caroline Burrell (Green Party) with the magnificent METMASTS.IE PERPETUAL TROPHY being proudly presented by CEO of METMASTS.IE. to James Tyrrell owner of “Aqualina”.

Coinciding with the event METMASTS.IE hosted our corporate event with boat trips, BBQ and music laid on at Arklow Sailing Club, All in all we had 34 clients attend and a good time was expressed by all. One of the long lasting memories from the clients is taking the helm of a 52ft Motor Yacht Son Vida II and cruising out to the offshore Windfarm, but for one client, Irish Radiophones Limited the abiding memory of the event is the birth of “Katy” who entered our world 4 hours after stepping of SON VIDA II. Our congratulations go to Lynda Duffy, daughter of MD, Stanley Dagg and there is no truth in the rumour that Lynda was bidding for the “Special Achievement Award”

Following the event, Michael Martyn CEO METMASTS.IE said “we are so pleased with the running of the event that we have agreed to extend our initial agreement with ASL from three to five years by which time we expect to see the race firmly established in the Irish Sailing Calendar. In the meantime we would like to take this opportunity to thank the Commodore of ASC, Paul Barrett and his entire team in organising a fantastic event. We also thank Córa Garvey from DMG Sailsports in promoting the event and looking after our clients, ConceptsOnline.co.uk for their GPS race tracking system which was the source of much interest amongst the crews post event, and of course Astins.co.uk for their beautiful trophy which was specially crafted for the

On May 23rd + 24th we had almost 100 newcomers to try out taster sessions in powerboating, windsurfing or sailing. Although Saturday was a bit cloudy and gusty, Sunday saw a gloriously sunny and warm day. We'd like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who came out to see us, try out new activities or just get more information about the activities and how you can take it further. The first instructor training course in the ISA's new PWC training scheme will take place in DMG Sailsports over 2 weekends March 21st - 22nd & 28th - 29th. The course will be run using the new fleet of ISA personal watercraft.

In order to be eligible for the course candidates must have the following pre-requisites; Pre-entry assessment, National Powerboat Certificate, Emergency Care certificate and VHF radio operators licence.

On the May bank holiday weekend, 2nd to 4th May 2009, the students from Coláiste Dhúlaigh and Malahide Yacht Club @ Broadmeadows Estuary will host the 2009 Fleadh Sheoil na hÉireann / 2009 Windsurfing Festival of Ireland. Irish Slalom Event in Malahide April 4+5

After one of the most successful competitive years of competition, the Irish Windsurfing Slalom Series is confirmed for 2009. The ISS Team has put together an even better schedule for the upcoming season.
Back on the calendar are the five events from last year. Neilpryde Group UK/ Surfdock.ie have organized the Irish Sea Challenge. The challenge involves the IWA and UKWA crossing the Irish Sea to battle it out for the Irish Sea Challenge Title. UKWA competitors will make the journey in April to Malahide to kick off the 2009 action.

First National PWC Certificate Course Run in Malahide

DMG Sailsports in Malahide played host to the first running of the Irish Sailing Associations new National Personal Watercraft (PWC) training scheme. The scheme is an initiative by the ISA to encourage the safe and responsible use of PWC alongside other water users. The students on this inaugural course were students from the Coláiste Dhúlaigh outdoor pursuits training course alongside Rachel and Sylvie from the ISA administration staff. The course was delivered by ISA instructor trainers Dave Garvey of DMG Sailsports and Ger Keeling.

Speed Windsurfing Production World Cup

From November 29th till December 6th all the big names of the sport will compete for points counting towards the 2008 Speed World Cup and the one-off Production World Cup Title. Irish Powerboating Takes Off...

Powerboating is now very much a growing sport in Ireland. In fact, in February 2008, the ISA employed Mr. Denis Dillon, a new Motorboat Development Officer with the organisation. Based in Killaloe, Denis is known to the boating community around the inland waterways and in the West of Ireland. With a long history of involvement in powerboat and motorboat training as both an ISA instructor and a keen boater in his own right, Denis’s remit is to promote all forms of Motorboating activity. Since February a lot of activity has taken place from the launch of the first Irish Jet Ski Club, to the ISA Yachtsman Euromarine RIB Championship.

VHF Radio Licence

Next Date: Sept 11+14. 1 evening and 1 full day: Thurs 7.30pm-10pm and Sun 9am to 4.30pm; Written Exam: 4.30-5.30pm; Oral Exam: 15mins per candidate (expect to be fully complete by 7pm). Cost: €280pp. Location: The Grand Hotel, Malahide.

Before you apply for a Ships Radio Licence (this applies to all vessels, irrespective of size) you should possess the necessary qualification. In the case of craft fitted with VHF only, the qualification is the Radio Operators Short Range Certificate Module 1. For vessels fitted with VHF DSC, (digital selective calling), the qualification required is the Radio Operators Short Range Certificate (SRC) Module 2 or full SRC. If you use a hand held VHF the boat must have a ship station licence also. Before attempting the examination you should attend a course provided by a recognised course provider. Possession of a radio operator’s certificate will enable you to use the correct radio procedure should you be encounter difficulty whilst afloat. MORE IMPORTANTLY!! You will be capable of assisting a nearby vessel or person and possibly save a life or lives!! The ability to use maritime VHF correctly can be a great confidence booster should the unforeseen occur. Windsurfing can be one of the most effective exercises you can do. In fact, converts claim it is so enjoyable you don't even realise that it's giving you a total body workout. The body benefits: Windsurfing targets shoulders, forearms and the lower back. The fitness benefits: As a beginner, you'll probably spend most of your time learning how to stand on the board of the windsurf. This involves using your leg muscles to balance on the board while employing your shoulders, forearms and lower back to control the force of the sail. Learning to balance on the windsurf also means you are employing 'core stability' - where you engage your deep postural muscles - the muscles that wrap around your pelvis like a natural girdle. This action can help strengthen the muscles that give you the definition of a waist. The other benefits: Travelling up to 20 miles per hour on your windsurf is so exhilarating you hardly know you're exercising. How many calories can you burn? This weekend, July 19th & 20th, we have just 2 places left on the windsurfing 'Go4It!' 2 day course. Lessons are from 10am to 4pm each day and cost just €240pp using DMG Sailsports equipment, or €200pp using your own equipment. During this intense 2 day course the instructor, Dave Garvey, will help you to perfect your sailing techniques, improve your rigging in order to get the best from the equipment being used, and introduce you to the next skills suitable to your level. Groups are small in order to provide an intimate learning environment. Just bring along a packed lunch and plenty of fluids to keep hydrated. Hours are Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 13.30 to 21.00 - morning lessons are available by arrangement; Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 10.00 to 18.00. We offer lessons for all levels from complete beginners, to advanced skills such as waterstarts, footstraps and gybes. Most of our equipment is new this year. The boards are Fanatic Vipers & Sharks, ranging between 220ltrs and 130ltrs volume. The sails are Loft and range in sizes from 7.4m to 3.5m all rigged on NeilPryde X3 masts and booms.
